Power Wheelchair and Scooter Comparison

Power wheelchairs and scooters provide the same type of functions but in different manners, each with clean-cut differences suited towards persons with unique mobility needs and wants.  Both do provide mobility, and with that independence.  Listed below are the differences and similarities with a brief description of each.

  • The Controller:  Perhaps the biggest difference is how the power wheelchair or scooter is controlled.  The scooter requires the use of both hands, arms, chest and shoulders to maneuver which requires more upper body strength than the controller of a power wheelchair which is controlled using the fingertips of your favored hand.

  • Maneuvering:  The power wheelchair has a much tighter turning radius than a scooter which will effect whether the mobility device can safely and easily be operated in a home.  Power wheelchairs are as capable outside of the home as inside.  Because of their greater turning radius scooters are best for outside use.

  • Seat/Comfort:  Power wheelchairs offer customization that scooters cannot quite match including more seating options. Most owners of power wheelchairs like the fact that they can sit in their power wheelchair it at the dinner table or while watching TV as the seats are typically more comfortable to go along with the added customization which comes into play if/when an individuals condition changes.
